2 dukat, Stockholm, Karl XIV Johan, 1843

During the reign of King Karl XIV Johan, 2-ducat coins began to be struck again. None had been struck for over a hundred years, since Queen Ulrika Eleonora's coinage in 1719. Karl XIV Johan's first 2-ducats, struck in 1830, were the same size as the 1-ducat coins but thicker. The following year, the 2-ducats were struck on a wider plate (the metal from which the coins were made) so that the 2-ducat was larger than the new 1-ducat. This made them easier to distinguish because they did not have the denomination printed and had the same appearance.
